You might have wondered or even worried about not getting any interview calls even after applying for several applications, in this article we will discuss one of the main reasons and how we can get through it.
ATS- Applicant tracking systems
First, let us see what ATS is and how it works…
Applicant tracking systems act as electronic gatekeepers for recruiters and hiring managers. The ATS system analyzes a resume’s content into categories and then scans it for specific and relevant keywords to determine if the job application should be passed along to the recruiter.
An Applicant Tracking System (or ATS) is software that can collect, scan and sort thousands of resumes, It will screen for the qualifications and skills the recruiter really needs.
A majority of MNCs use ATS systems, and different recruiting software works to filter the applications.
10 Ways to get through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
1. Social media accounts
Some ATS software has the capability to locate your social media accounts if it is public, this may benefit you sometimes if you had properly optimized your social media accounts. It is your choice to decide whether you want to showcase or hide your social media platforms from your potential employers.
2. The file name and metadata
ATS looks for the Metadata of your resume so it is important to include relevant keywords to the file name so it is important to professionally name your resume file with relevant keywords.
3. Font does matter
Pick Arial over Times New Roman- some ATS consider checking the font to filter out how professional your resume is and it is good to have Arial font rather than others.
It is always good to keep both versions of the text as most ATS software doesn’t recognize many acronyms.
5. Deleting your previous applications
Remove all your previous applications if you had applied for the same company, ATS has the ability to compile the contents of the previous applications to your latest which will cause confusion during the process.
6. Traditional words
Always use traditional words in your resume. for example Skills, Work Experience and not as my goods or Old hustles. AST may not recognize these words and not select your profile.
7. Header and Footer
Most of the ATS software will not read the Header and Footer so better not to have any information on those.
8. File Format
Submitting the correct format is important, go through the portal and find which format of the file is requested to be submitted, the ATS system may not track your file if you submit any other type of file.
Always try to upload your resumes in .pdf and or .docx file format, ATS is found to easily read .docx files compared to other files.
9. Skills Section
Always have a Skills section in your resume, this is the section where you can include relevant keywords if in case you can’t have the keywords in other sections.
Including a skills section with keywords makes it easier to scan your application for the terms the recruiter is looking for.
10. Use the Job description
Make sure the resume you are submitting mirrors the tone(language style- Use Grammarly to make your life simple) and grammar of the job description. The job description is the place where you can find the important keywords required for the application to be selected. As mentioned earlier use traditional words.
