That’s why we’ve created this blog post with the best practices of SEO, that will help to get your site ahead of the curve!
Let’s dive right in………
1. How to Use Keywords Precisely
Keywords are search terms, that your target audience uses to find their relevant results from search engines.
But, just sprinkling over those keywords over and over (above optimum density), is not going to provide any good for your site in most cases.
So here’s the step-by-step simple but complete guide on what you should do, while performing keyword research.
A. Understand User Intent of your Target Keyword
Yes, it’s really important to know, what your visitor is expecting from you.
If a user is searching for, Pushups.
He/She may be expecting an output that may differ from one person to another.
What are pushups?
How many Pushups should I perform a day?
Adverse effects of too many pushups.
Benefits of doing pushups every day?
and so on…
Since a broad keyword like pushups shows up with a broader range of queries.
If we look at a long-tail keyword, relevant to pushups:
Which part of my muscles are targeted when I do pushups?
Here, the user intent is specific, concise, and clear.
So here we can conclude, broader keywords may have a larger volume but the intent of your user is not specific.
Whereas, long-tail keywords helps us in understanding what our user needs and what solution he/she may be expecting.
Instead of chasing broad keywords, the better best option from most SEOs is to target long-tail keywords, which may have lower search volume (as compared to broader keywords).
But the user intent is precise and accurate.
So that you can also answer both conscious and unconscious answers of your target audience.
B. Collecting Keywords for your Target Industry
Since you have understood the importance of user intent, now let’s have a look at how to collect the top-ranking organic keywords of our competitors.
If you don’t know who your competitors are or how to find them, follow along.
Go to Google.com/no country redirect and search for your niche or target topic.
In my case, I am choosing SEO.
Afterward, collect three to five websites that show up on SERPs.
Go to Similarweb.com and drop those site URLs from step 1 to the search bar one by one.
Afterward, click on the competitor’s tab on the left-hand side.
Now, the websites, you’re seeing right now will be similar sites in respect to the URL you put in.
These similar sites have been listed in terms of the similarity in the content they publish.
For a detailed guide follow along with the video:
For collecting your list of competitors you can also use Spyfu, and Alexa too, but my best pick among them will be SimilarWeb.
While choosing competitors using Similar Web, select only those sites that have a Category rank of >= 50 and a Global rank between 20,000 to 50,000.
C) Collecting Organic Keywords of My Competitors
After, getting a bucket list of competitors our next plan is to collect their top ranking organic keywords, which are less competitive and have a sufficient amount of volume to target.
So let’s get started…
Go to Ubersuggest.io and drop any of your competitor’s domains.
In my case, it’s searchenginejournal.
Go to the bottom and click on, View all SEO Keywords This Domain Ranks For.
Filter the results according to your preference.
In my case, I am setting:
SEO difficulty <= 40
Volume >= 1000
After collecting a list of less competitive keywords, select your desired keywords that show up on the list that you want to rank for.
In my case, I’m gonna choose “apps for social media” and click on it.
After completing step 4, you will see an overview of that keyword in terms of Competition, Volume, and CPC.
If you scroll down a bit, you will be able to see the keyword ideas report, click on the below button called View All Keyword Ideas for more…
These keywords are relatively similar to the word “apps for social media” and can be used for getting more precise long-tail keywords in respect to the target.
You can use the keywords been shown along with the target keywords too(Obeying user intent).
If you go through the Related, Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons tabs at the top.
You will find more useful keywords.
Make a list of all those keywords you got till now from steps 3 to 5.
In my case:
This chart is just an overview of the list of the related keywords and it can be bigger, but you are the expert on the topic you are going to write about so it’s your job to shortlist those keywords which match the search intent of the user.
After shortlisting sprinkle these keywords throughout your content at the necessary places and don’t try to shove them over and over or more than necessary on your content.
We will talk about the optimum keyword density as we go through this section.
D) Hunt for LSI Keywords from Your Target Keyword
For an in-depth guide for LSI keywords, follow this video:
To collect LSI keywords, go to keysearch.co and drop your target keyword.
Afterward, you will get a list of LSI keywords or in SEO lingo, it’s also called Latent Semantic Indexing.
Sprinkle these words into your content too, so that Google can understand you have covered the target keyword topic precisely.
Take your target keyword and put it into Google then copy the page link that comes up on the first organic position on SERPs and follow along.
Go to SEOBook.com (signup for an account before going to step 4).
Go to the Keyword density checker tool of SEOBook and drop the URL you copied in step 2.
Change the Minimum word length and occurrences to 4 then submit.
Take all those keywords who have a density > 0.39% and drop those to your bucket list too.
Now your keyword list must have been expanded comprising of related keywords and proof terms.
Use those keywords that come relevant to your target topic throughout your article at the relevant places.
Stay away from keyword stuffing.
Which is a harmful strategy to do so;
Instead use LSI keywords and relevant terms that we took in, rather than using our target keyword over and over again.
What should be the optimum density for a keyword?
In the beginner’s guide to keyword density, from Hubspot
They have formulated the equation to be as follows for the optimum keyword density.
Whereas in my case, I always use my target keyword approx four times for an 1800 word count comprised article, and for the rest, I will use my proof terms and relevant terms along with the LSI keywords at necessary places.
2. Advanced Internal Linking
Internal Linking is one of the effective SEO strategies which is far easy to perform and provides an SEO boost for the existing content in google for your desired keywords.
Proper execution can provide massive jumps in Google rankings, without investing much on backlinks.
Since internal linking helps to pass authority or link juice from one page to another thorough out the interlinked pages of your site.
A) How Internal Linking helps
It plays a major role in increasing the indexation rate of your pages.
So if you face latency in indexing your newly published posts or pages, you can just add an internal link from one of your existing pages to your target page.
Don’t try to perform internal linking for the sake of it, instead only add internal links that are relevant and are valuable for the user.
B) How to Perform an Effective Internal Linking strategy
Let’s see some of the actionable ways to perform internal linking for your site.
- Strategy 1: Find Existing Internal Linking Opportunities
Got to Google and use the syntax as follows:
site:yoursitename.com + main keyword
The above process will list out all the pages of your site, which are targeting your main keywords.
In this way, you’ll be able to internal link those pages together.
- Strategy 2: Find the Pages with Most Inbound Links and Create an Internal linking Opportunity
The main goal of this second strategy is to find the pages with more backlinks and update that specific content or page for creating new internal linking opportunities.
Now let’s find out how you can perform this second strategy step by step…
Go to ubersuggest and drop in your site domain.
For example, Let’s drop-in “searchenginejournal[dot]com” and click search.
Click on the left-hand side of the page showing: Top Pages by Traffic.
From here you’ll be able to see the pages having backlinks been listed out in descending order.
Like so, you can also find out your top pages, which can be used to create more internal linking opportunities.
If you want to filter out the pages for your target keyword, you can click on the Filters tab on the right-hand side.
Then drop your keywords on the pop-up and, click apply.
Make sure you are using keyword-rich anchor text.
If you’re targeting a keyword like “SEO Starter Guide.”
Make sure your anchor text also comprises the partial match or LSI keywords at necessary places (Don’t over-optimize ).
3. Optimize the SEO Title Tags
The title’s that you choose for your business page or blog post are able to do one of the two things:
Are you sure your current blog post title is worthy enough to pull in more visitors?
Everyone considers content is king, but actually that’s not true.
Whereas the actual truth is:
Your title tag is the king and the content you provide is the queen. If the king fails to satisfy the interest of your prospect or user, then the queen is as same as dead or worthless.
So here are some practices that you can execute to accomplish the needs of your title tag.
Go to Google and search for your target keyword, and just skim through the title tags your competitors are using.
Understand the emotion behind it.
Firstly, what came to your mind when you first saw it. Does it trigger your interest in checking it out and reveal what’s waiting behind it?
Secondly, Check out Where the keywords are being placed. Is it appended at the beginning of the title tag or are they wrapped in with the surrounding text?
Thirdly, Can you create similar versions of those title tags without duplicating them?
Jot down different versions of those interesting titles you come up with.
For Example, Since you’re reading this post, In the first place the title tag I have been used (Best Practices For SEO: 2022 Invasion Guide) for this post worked out by engaging your interest and pushing you to check it out.
While jotting down the title tag variations as we have discussed in step 1, keep these in mind:
- Keep the characters < 60.
- Don’t try to repeat words.
- Try to add keywords at the front of the title tag. (if it look natural)
- Append words that trigger emotion. (Try to use any of the follows, to make it more interesting and to the point.)
- Trigger Curiosity: Astonishing, Myths, Jaw-Dropping etc.
- Trigger Simplicity: Instant, Tactics, How to, Easy to Follow etc.
- Trigger Trust: Studies Show, Genuine, Reliable etc.
- Trigger Vanity: Ultimate, Smart, Amazing, Epic etc.
- Trigger Fear: Toxic, Crazy, Deadly, Caution etc.
If you are curious to know more about these and much more alternative words to create amazing titles. Sign up for our getseoideas official newsletter.
Now let’s check out will your title tag attract more click-through rates or not.
To do so, go to Headline Analyzer an awesome tool from Monster Insights, and drop in the title tag ideas you came up with.
Afterward, click on analyze to see your results.
If your score strikes greater than 65, then you have come up with a pretty good title for your topic. But don’t stop there try to improve it a little more, so that you can make it more impressive.
4. URL Structure
Most of the SEOs will always tell us to use shorter URLs with our target keyword, but Google itself has declared that URLs only act as identifiers, you don’t need to push yourself to make it short for the sake of it.
But try to make the URL under 1000 characters, which makes the monitoring much easier.
Should you use dashes (-) or Underscores(_) in URLs
Underscores are been generally used to join two words together, in our case using underscore in URL also works in the same way.
For example, Let’s consider two cases.
- URL with underscores:
In this case when Google bot analysis your Page URL, it returns the value like so, bestpracticesforseoacomplete2021guide.
Here the Google bot conjoins the whole URL path into a single word, which doesn’t make much sense.
- URL with dashes:
But in this case, the dashes between them separate each word from the other and the final output will be, best practices for SEO a complete 2021 guide.
Always use dashes instead of underscores and if your URL has dates in it try to remove that too, this will make the URL more concise.
Canonicalization of URL
In such cases, Google will randomly choose shorter and cleaner URLs from the list of multiple copies.
When Google finds out multiple copies or duplication of a page, Google will pick one of those URLs for indexing.
If there are multiple copies of a page on your site remove it if it’s not necessary, use rel = “canonical” attribute, or perform 301 redirects.
Keywords in URL
Adding keywords in the URL is pretty much helpful.
But your main motive must be to make the URL clear and concise for both the user and bot.
It doesn’t matter whether you use keywords in the path name or align it all together (separated by dashes), it depends upon you, but don’t try to put your keyword more than once in your URL.
5. Image SEO
For blog posts or pages to visually stand out, images are a good alternative that helps you to build up the dwell time.
But just adding relevant images to the targeted topic is not just enough.
If you follow the step-by-step procedure as shown below, then you can also optimize your images with respect to SEO.
So here we go:
Use Alt tags
As I already mentioned image optimization is also an integral part when it comes to best practices for SEO.
whenever you’re trying to include images in your post, always make sure you have provided a descriptive alt or alternative text.
So that both search engines and visually impaired people can understand the intent of the image.
The wrong way to do it:
In this case, the alt tag is not descriptive enough, since screen readers and search engines would not be able to accurately consider whats the image is about actually.
So always try to be descriptive enough so that you can prove the intent of the image, as you can see above. (fig: 2)
Optimize File Size
Images having larger sizes, for example,> 1MB, will destroy your optimum page speed.
To counteract it, you have to always keep the image file size as less as 500KB as possible.
If a particular page is taking higher latency to load up completely due to your image size, it will adversely affect your site SEO.
To optimize image file size you can use TinyPNG.com
Along with file sizes, the image file format also matters, such as JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG.
So as a Search engine optimizer, your job is to know when and where to use the appropriate file formats.
Use JPEG for larger images, PNG for preserving background transparency, Webp can be used as a replacement for JPEG or PNG if you are focusing on high quality + smaller size images, SVG for logos and icons.
6. Link Building for SEO – How it Can Help Your Website to Rank Higher in Search Engines
Link Building for SEO is a vital component of digital marketing, and it can help your site to rank higher in search engines. This technique involves promoting your website’s content on authoritative websites to establish your credibility.
The goal of this process is to develop relationships with authoritative websites that are both relevant to your audience and to your brand.
High-quality backlinks from other sites help you to gain better rankings in search engines. There are many ways to do this.
One method is to create inbound links from related websites. For example, if you have an expert in the field of hair care, you can create inbound links related to that area.
But to build authority in that space, you must use anchor text that is relevant to your target audience. When you link to a website, Google bots can see your destination URL.
So, it’s important to choose relevant anchor text. Make sure your anchor text is relevant.
In addition to building links from authoritative websites, you can also build links from related sites. Link building from relevant websites will help your website rank well in search results.
Always keep in mind that the purpose of linking is to generate targeted referral traffic. As long as your content is useful to the target audience, you’ll get more links.
The more links your website receives, the better, and more importantly your business will be. And remember, that your goal should be to earn more visitors as often as possible.
Link building is a process, and it takes time to see results. It’s important to remember that the more effort you put into it, the better results you’ll have.
And while it’s essential to create quality links, the more time you spend doing it, the more likely you are to get the desired results.
Just remember, it’s worth the effort to get the best results from your campaign. The more effort you put into it, the more likely you’ll see a high ranking in search engines.
It’s crucial to set up your website properly before you start building links. After all, you’ve spent a lot of time creating your site, now it’s time to build links that help your business rank higher.
A successful link-building campaign will also focus on maximizing your number of linking domains and earning links from new and unique sources.
By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to increase your chances of ranking on search engines.
As the popularity of the Internet grows, so do the benefits of link building. Good links send readers to other pages, and good links can help your website rank higher in search engines.
Therefore, it’s important to focus on websites that generate traffic and are related to your business. If you’re looking to promote your site, you should focus on high-quality, relevant backlinks.
You should focus on the sites with the most authority and trustable backlinks.
Another important component of link-building is outreach. It’s important to reach out to other websites that will benefit from your content. You can then invite these sites to link to your website and explain why your content is valuable to their audience.
Using different channels will also help you reach out to the right people for link-building. There are many benefits to building links for SEO.
There are more than two million websites that will benefit from the link, and it’s not hard to find some that can benefit your website the most.
In order to be effective in link-building, you need to connect with other people. You should connect with others in your industry, and try to build a relationship with each of them.
This will help your site get more links, as they usually link to other sites that contain valuable content.
Once you’ve established a relationship with a potential link, the next step is to approach the website owners in person. By networking with other people, you’ll build credibility and a reputation that will benefit your website.
The purpose of link building is to build links from other websites to your own website. The goal of link building is to create and maintain relationships with other websites.
Having links from other sites will improve your site’s visibility in the search engines. If you want to succeed in link-building, you must create content that attracts people.
It’s not enough to simply publish content; you need to create content that’s useful to your audience.
7. How Click Depth For SEO Affects Your Ranking in Search Results
More Importance is being given to pages on search results in respect to how much clicks it takes to get to the site home page (your site.com).
There are many important factors to consider when it comes to optimizing your website, including Click Depth for SEO.
Many SEO experts ignore this aspect of their work, but John Mueller, the Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google, clarified the importance of this factor.
In a recent webmaster hangout, Mueller addressed this issue explicitly. To find out more about how click depth affects your ranking in search results, read his explanation below.
In SEO, this is an important factor to consider. Deeper pages will lower your PageRank, which means a lower PageRank.
One way to improve your click depth is to use a pagination scheme. By doing so, you can increase the depth of your most important pages, but they will hinder Googlebot navigation.
For instance, if your website has fifty articles, you should include links to the next 3-5 pages and previous pages. The result is that each page has a higher click depth than any other.
To improve your site’s click depth, you can use a sitemap to identify the most important pages on your site. By analyzing the number of clicks from one page to the next, you can identify the best way to make these pages even more relevant to the search queries.
To make sure all of your content is easily accessible, you should make your homepage the cornerstone of your website. If you want to boost your authority on Google, you should put all of your content within four clicks from your homepage.
A low click depth helps you get your visitors to perform actions efficiently. It also keeps them from getting frustrated or leaving the website if they do not find what they need. A good example of low click depth is a one-page checkout.
Flat architecture improves both visibility and search engine optimization. But don’t get caught up in the “fewer clicks, the better.” It’s essential to provide a positive user experience to make your website more successful.
The goal of optimizing for click depth is to increase the number of links from the homepage to other pages. This is important because deep links will cause Google to ignore your website. By making your pages easy to find, you will boost your site’s authority.
But you must know that deep linking will lead to a lower page rank. As a result, your site should have high-quality content to attract more customers. The more clicks you have on the website, the better your search engine optimization.
The deeper your links go, the more you should rank for each of them. If you have a high-quality website, Google will rank it higher. The goal of optimizing click depth is to make all of your content within four clicks of your homepage.
Adding a link to your homepage from your homepage can be effective for SEO. In addition to improving the page ranking, it will improve the user experience for your visitors.
Click depth for SEO is important because of its importance for Google. Imagine a tower of champagne glasses. The first glass is the homepage, while the bottom two glasses are the links to other pages.
The first page receives the most SEO juice, while the deepest pages get no juice at all. Similarly, pages linked from the homepage should have high click-depth.
The higher the number of links, the more likely a user will be to click on the link to the other page.
A well-optimized website will help improve click-through rate. If a page takes several clicks to reach it, Google will not crawl it.
This means that a page will not be indexed, and it will not be visible in the search results. The higher the number of clicks, the higher the ranking.
This is especially true if your site is large and has multiple pages. By optimizing your site for click-through-rate, you’ll improve the visibility of your content and boost the authority of your website.
The goal of optimizing your website for search engines is to increase the number of clicks on your homepage. By improving your site’s click-through rate, you’ll increase your traffic and boost your rankings.
In addition to boosting your site’s SEO ranking, you’ll also be able to rank well in search engines for keywords related to your website.
While these are all important, the goal is to make all your content within four clicks of the homepage.
8. How to Optimize Content for Voice Search
One way to optimize content for voice searches is to make it more specific. While it might seem like overkill, a recent study by the Forbes Communications Council revealed that nearly 40 percent of all voice searches result in local search results.
Since so many people use voice to ask questions, your content needs to answer these questions in an efficient way. If you’re unsure how to go about optimizing your content, here are some tips.
Create headers. Include relevant keywords in the question form. This will increase your chances of having the search engine pull answers from your content. Keep your answers short and concise. Your goal should be to make the answers 30 words or less.
In addition, you should be sure to provide a link to a video, audio, or podcast that is relevant to the question.
For better results, make sure to use descriptive titles. For video, make sure that your subtitles are brief, and use neutral language.
Long-tail keywords and filler words should be included in your content. Many people use voice search to find specific information.
For instance, if you run a wedding boutique, you may want to create content about the most beautiful dresses on Main Street. Contextual cues, images, and relevant keywords should be used to make the content more relevant to the searcher’s query. It’s best to use long-tail keywords when possible.
You should also optimize your content for voice search by making your content answer common questions such as “who,” “where,” and “why.”
This is vital because most people using voice search are on the go and want a quick answer. If your content isn’t answering these questions, your audience won’t find it.
Therefore, it’s best to keep your answers brief and make them as concise as possible. As a rule, you should limit your answers to 30 words or less.
When creating content for voice search, it’s important to keep user intent in mind. Users tend to use voice search to look for products or services they need.
You should focus on optimizing your content for voice search by keeping in mind the questions that people will be asking when using a voice assistant. Featured snippets and FAQ pages are just a couple of examples of ways to optimize for the new format.
When optimizing for voice search, it’s important to use long-tail keywords and filler words. These words are commonly used in everyday conversation. They help to make your content more interactive. The same is true for mobile devices.
The use of schema makes it possible for Google to recognize your content. By adding your website’s location, you can increase your chances of getting found by Google.
In addition to addressing user concerns, you can also optimize your site for voice search for mobile users.
Using voice search is an important strategy for SEO.
By adding FAQs, you can make your content more informative and answer the questions that users ask. By using question-based keywords, you can also improve the chances of getting your content on a voice search.
For eCommerce sites, FAQs should be added to the product descriptions.
Including these kinds of questions in your content will help you rank for more voice searches. The content should also be optimized for mobile devices.
Using voice search in your content is important to achieving optimal search engine optimization. Using specific phrases and keywords for voice searches can help you achieve higher rankings.
For example, if your target audience is on a mobile device, you can create a mobile-optimized blog post. Your content should answer questions and make recommendations. By using these words and phrases, your content will be found by search engines more easily.
To optimize content for voice search, make sure your FAQ section contains question-answers. Putting these questions in headers will help Google to pull your answers.
If you’re writing for voice search, make sure to keep the content to thirty words or less. In this way, it will appear on the top of the SERPs, resulting in higher visibility for your website.
So, take advantage of the power of voice search to attract more potential customers to your website.
9. Improving Page Speed For SEO
The first step in improving page speed is to diagnose the problem and establish a benchmark. This can be done by using several free performance testing services online.
To get an average score, run tests on multiple sites and use the mean. For most websites, page speeds under 1.5 seconds are good.
Anything over this will require major improvement.
This will improve the user experience and ultimately, your rankings.
Listed below are some of the steps you can take to make your site faster.
- The first step is to ensure your site loads quickly. Web users are looking for answers and don’t like to wait for pages to load.
The average page load time is 1.5 seconds. Getting a site up and running quickly is critical for a good user experience and SEO.
While the amount of time spent loading a page can vary by device, a higher page speed indicates that the website is more accessible to users.
- Another key factor in SEO is page speed. Google recently announced a test for desktop and mobile load times, and the faster your site is, the better it is for your ranking.
By improving page speed, you can get the best rankings by ensuring that your site is accessible to both mobile and desktop users.
Regardless of your website’s niche, it is important to keep your pages fast. Even small improvements can improve your page’s ranking.
Improving page speed is essential for a website’s success. It will increase the chance of visitors staying longer and interacting with the site. Also, a site with a fast loading time is more likely to appear on Google’s first page.
By improving page speed, you’ll be able to reduce the bounce rate, which is an indicator of a slow loading page.
As a general rule, pages that take more than five seconds to load will have a high bounce rate, meaning that more visitors will simply leave without taking any action.
The sooner your site can load, the better. Fortunately, there are simple ways to improve page speed and lower the bounce rate.
Improving page speed is important for your website’s SEO. Increasing the speed of your site is essential to ensure that your website is ranked high in search results. With a faster pace, you’ll have more chances to attract more visitors.
You should consider reducing the size of your images. These images can be very heavy and slow down the overall speed of your website. In addition to optimizing your images, you should also focus on your site’s content.
Improving page speed is essential for SEO. If a visitor isn’t able to load a page in 1.5 seconds, they’re unlikely to stick around.
Moreover, if your site isn’t loading fast enough, your visitors won’t be able to interact with it. This will increase your chances of ranking on the first page of Google. You’ll have to be patient, but if you improve your page speed, you’ll see the benefits.
Increasing page speed is important for your SEO strategy. The quicker your site loads, the more likely it will be indexed by search engines.
The faster your site loads, the more likely it will perform well in the SERPs. So, you should make sure that your pages load faster than the competition.
For this, you should use tools to test your pages for page speed and make immediate improvements. Besides, you should also take the time to conduct a page speed test on your website to find out how long it takes for your site to load.
Improving page speed is an important aspect of your SEO strategy. It is important to improve the speed of your pages because Google ranks sites with a faster page.
Consequently, it is essential to optimize page speed for SEO. If you want to increase your page speed, you need to take the time to measure it.
The first byte of your webpage is very important, so make sure that it is as fast as possible. While the first byte isn’t as critical as the rest of your website, it can make a difference.
